Dear Emanuel Boieiro,
With the holiday season just around the corner, we want to thank you for all your support during 2014.
Nurses around the state have continued to be passionate about our ratios campaign throughout the year, despite a lacklustre response from the NSW Government.

Mid-year, the Government refused to properly consider our claim for improved and extended ratios.
Then the Health Minister Jillian Skinner  devoted five minutes to discussing our petition in Parliament in November, after 10,000+ signatures were presented to her at Annual Conference in July. [We are approaching 100,000 names on the petition in total.]

Despite this, we will keep on arguing that ratios are essential for safe patient care - and the research backs us up. Linda Aiken, a professor of nursing from the US and expert on ratios, told a Brisbane symposium in December that nurse levels and skills mix has a significant impact on patient survival rates, hospital inquired infections and falls.

In the face of cuts to Medicare which threaten to send a new avalanche of patients into Emergency Departments, ED nurses have become vocal in calling for a ratio of 1 to 3 in ED - for example, these nurses from Royal North Shore Hospital targeted their local train station in October.

On a positive note, the state ALP has committed to to delivering expanded nurse-to-patient ratios to all areas not previously covered if elected in March 2015.
We will certainly continue our activities next year. Meanwhile, thanks again for your support, have a healthy, safe summer break and we'll be back in 2015.
